ROCHESTER LAKE MONSTERS 3
A trio combined on a 2-hitter to lead the Lake Monsters. Kyle Povlock(RIT) started and struck out three over three innings for the win. The right-hander allowed one hit and walked two. Matthew Dessena(St. John Fisher) hurled three more shutout frames and set down three on strikes without a walk. Brian Linton(Johns Hopkins) hurled a scoreless stanza to pick up the save. Justin Augustine(Bethel) brought Nate Chase(Grand Valley State) home with a two-out in the first, and the Monsters had all the runs they needed. Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Tyler Smith(Niagara County CC) singled and scored a run. Dom Palma(Manhattan College) was 2-for-2. Max Troiani(Bentley) and Sean Flannery(Kings) had a single and an RBI apiece.

Tyler Smith(Niagara County CC) hurled four innings and picked up his second win of the season. Smith struck out two and allowed one run on three hits. In eight innings of work this summer, opposing batters are hitting .143 against the incoming freshman.  After issuing a leadoff walk to start the first, Smith retired eight of the next nine batters he faced. Billy Sanborn(Jefferson CC) worked three innings to notch the save. Sanborn faced the minimum for the first two innings with battery mate Jordan Plaisted(Elmira College) erasing a two-out walk in the fifth and one-out free pass in the sixth when runners tried to steal second. Nate Chase(Grand Valley State) doubled and scored in the first. Max Troiani(Bentley University) brought home Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) with a sacrifice fly in the third. Zach Harterand Adam Chase(Finger Lakes CC) tripled and doubled to give the Monsters a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Jonah Harderdoubled in a pair of runs in the seventh as the Blazers brought the winning run to the plate in their final at bat. Tommy Bianchiwas 2-for-2 with an RBI. The Lake Show improved to 6-1 with their fifth straight win.

Michael Donofrio(Brockport College) allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work to pick up the win. Donofrio struck out four, walked two and faced four batters over the minimum. Hector Vargas(Erie CC) and Jared Wren(St. John Fisher College) hurled a scoreless inning apiece in relief. Wren fanned two in a three-up, three-down frame. Michael Jamele(Merrimack) tripled, had two hits and scored twice to pace the offense. Mike Sabatine(University of Maine) tripled and added a run. Brandon Henshaw(St. Bonaventure) and Steven Kemp(Medaille) had two hits and drove in a run apiece. Henshaw scored a run. Cole Penders(Brockport) walked, knocked a hit and scored twice. Mike Maganti(St. Bonaventure)  collected a hit, walk, an RBI and scored twice. Logan Delutisled the Indians with two hits and a run scored. Rocco Leonedrove in Rome's lone run.

Nick Antonelloallowed two runs on five hits over six innings for the win. Antonello struck out seven, walked one and threw 79 pitches (61 for strikes). Rocco Leonefinished 2-for-3 with a walk and scored two runs to avenge a loss in the first game of the doubleheader. Nick Brownhad an RBI and scored three runs. Timmy Shintowent 2-for-4 with two RBI. Andrew O'Connorworked a scoreless inning of relief. Hector Vargas(Erie CC) went 2-for-3 and drove in the lone Monarchs run. Mike Magnanti(St. Bonaventure) walked and scored.

Jayson Faynor(Genesee CC) took a no hitter into the sixth inning and contributed at the plate to lead the Fish. Faynor struck out one, walked two and needed just 82 pitches (49 for strikes) to get through six innings. The right-hander allowed just three balls out of the infield through the first five innings and retired 12 batters overall on ground balls. His RBI double push the Fish advantage to 5-0.  Jeff Wilson(LeMoyne College) doubled and scored in a three-run first to give the Fish a lead the did not surrender. Wilson walked and scored another run. John Faynor(Genesee CC) went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Jason Schulz(RIT) singled and scored. Matt Carroll(SUNY Fredonia) doubled in a run.

David Verrettconnected on a two-out walk-off single to cap a come-from-behind victory for the Snow Dogs.Seth Reusmanworked a one-out base on balls and eventually scored the game winner. James Croninhurled three shutout innings in relief for the win. The right-hander struck out one, walked two and allowed three hits. Jeff Wilson (LeMoyne College) finished 3-for-3 including a two-run single in the third to give the Flyin' Fish their first lead of the game. Kole Brink(SUNY Fredonia) and Ryan Hill(Monroe CC) knocked back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth for a 4-2 advantage, but the Fish could not hold the lead. Zachary Williamsonhad two hits including a leadoff double to start the sixth.  Michael Krickwent 2-for-3 and had an RBI two-bagger in the sixth when the Dogs knotted the game. Wyatte Meyerwas 3-for-4 for the Dogs. Jayson Faynor(Genesee CC) had two hits in three at bats and scored once. Hill collected two hits and a walk. Matt Petrossi(Monroe CC) started and tossed four innings for the Fish. The right-hander struck out two, walked one and allowed two unearned runs on four hits.

Hillabush gets Fish off Schneid; Henshaw paces Monarchs

Brandon Henshaw(St. Bonaventure) paced an 11-hit attack with five base raps including a run-scoring single in the first as the Monarchs put a crooked number on the scoreboard and never trailed. Henshaw finished 3-for-5 on the night and collected four RBI. Jason Wasilnak(St. John Fisher) hurled four innings to pick up the win. The left-hander fanned three and allowed two runs on three hits in his second appearance of the summer. Wasilnak allowed one run on three hits over three innings in the Monarchs opener. The Monarchs top of the order, Raymond Specht(Niagara County CC), Tommy Baxter(Daytona) and Mike Magnanti(St. Bonaventure) scored two runs apiece. Baxter put the game out of reach in the seventh with a triple that scored Aaron Shoemaker(Finger Lakes CC) and Stephen Kemp(Medaille). Baxter collected three RBI in the game. Kemp went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Mike Donofrio(Brockport College) hurled three shutout innings in relief. The right-hander struck out five, walked one and faced two over the minimum. Donofrio threw 47 pitches, 29 for strikes. Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Lake Monsters. Catapano connected on a solo shot in the eighth. David Stirpe(Messiah College) singled, walked and scored a run.

Dylan Hillabush (Niagara) started and hurled three innings for the win, and the Flying Fish won their first game of the season. After allowing a run on three hits in the first inning, Hillabush set down five of the next six he faced. The left-hander fanned struck out four without a walk and surrendered six hits. Christian Montaneztook the baton and surrendered a run on two hits over two innings. Jayson Faynor(Genesee CC) needed 25 pitches to get through two shutout innings. The right-hander punched out three and walked none. With Hillabush holding serve, the Flying Fish jumper to an early 5-1 advantage. Anthony Mashewske(Keuka College) finished 2-for-3 and reached base three times. The right fielder scored three runs and drove in another. Jeff Wilson(LeMoyne) doubled, walked and drove in two runs. Dan Bamann(Keuka College) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. The game featured a brother vs. brother duel when Cody Cooper(Finger Lakes CC) came to the plate in the seventh against his younger brother Tanner Cooper(Finger Lakes CC). The elder Cooper got the better of this meeting connecting for a three-run tater which he deposited over the fence in left-centerfield. Michael Perlo (Cornell) scored twice in the game. The Monarchs Tommy Baxter (Daytona) was 2-for-2 and finished with three hits and three RBI on the night. Stephen Kemp (Medaille) went 2-for-3. Mike Jamele (Merrimack College) had two hits and scored a run.

Povlock and Smith hurl zeroes; Sabatine paces Monarchs

LAKE MONSTERS 8 FLYING FISH 4
Kyle Povlock(RIT) and Tyler Smith(Niagara County CC) combined to throw 2-hit ball for five innings, and the Lake Monster offense took advantage of Flying Fish generosity to register a win in their opener. Povlock struck out six, walked one and faced one batter over the minimum through three innings to pick up the win. The right-hander tossed 52 pitches, 26 for strikes. After Sean Sheets(Keuka) reached on a leadoff error, Povlock struck out four straight. Smith worked two scoreless. He retired the side in order in the fourth and induced a double play to erase a leadoff single in the fifth. Max Troiani(Bentley) and Brian Linton(Johns Hopkins) both finished 2-for-3 on the night and paced a two-run fourth, but the Monsters capitalized on four walks and four wild pitches to score four runs in the third innings. Justin Augustine(Bethel), Jason Tisa(Wilkes), Colin Coykendall(Monroe CC) and Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) all walked and crossed home plate in the third. Catapano and Tisa scored twice in the game. Troiani doubled and Linton singled as the Monsters pushed their advantage to 6-0 in the fourth. Troiani collected an RBI with a single in the fifth. Billy Sanborn(Jefferson CC) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Michael Perlo(Cornell) singled and scored two in a four-run Flying Fish sixth. Sheets brought in another with a base hit. Nic Fiore (SUNY Fredonia) singled and scored a run. Christian Montanezstarted and threw two shutout frames to open the game for the Flying Fish.

MONARCHS 10 FLYING FISH 6
Mike Sabatine(Maine) reached base all four times he came to the plate and sparked a decisive third inning as the Monarchs opened the season with a win. Sabatine finished 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. The Section V Class AA Player of the Year opened the third with a stand-up triple, and the Monarchs broke open 4-4 game. Mike Magnanti(St. Bonaventure) went 2-for-3 with two run scored, and two RBI including bringing in Sabatine with a groundout.Cole Penders(Brockport College) highlighted the inning with a two-run double that one-hopped the fence in left center. Penders collected three RBI in the game. Raymond Specht(Niagara County CC) was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Brandon Henshaw (St. Bonaventure) had a single and an RBI. Jared Wren(St. John Fisher) started and fanned three over three innings to pick up the win. The right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits. Jason Wasilnak(St. John Fisher) let up one run on three hits over three innings. Dylan Hillabush(Niagara U) fanned four over three frames.  Nic Fiorefinished 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for the Flying Fish. Cody Cooper(Finger Lakes CC) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Ben Martin(Brockport College) doubled, walked and scored a run.

ICBL opens this Week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Interstate Collegiate Baseball League (ICBL) opens its second season of play with action in Syracuse on Wednesday, May 30 and in Rochester Thursday, May 31.

Six teams (three each in both cities) will play a 30-game regular season scheduled to conclude on July 22nd.  Playoffs will immediately follow with a single elimination format.

The Flying FishLake Monsters and Monarchswill once again compete in the Rochester Division with a vast majority of games being played at University of Rochester's Towers Field.

The Flying Fish and Monarchs open play with a 5:30 PM game, Thursday and the nightcap follows immediately with the Flying Fish and Lake Monsters doing battle.  The Monarchs won the 2017 Rochester title.

The Copper City BlazersRome Indians and Snow Dogsmake up the Syracuse contingent with games to be played at Delutis Field. The Blazers and Indians open with a traditional doubleheader on May 30. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5 PM.

Crossover games are scheduled for Saturday, June 9 at the University of Rochester. The Indians and Monarchs will play a double dip followed by a Flying Fish-Snow Dogs twin bill. The Blazers and Lake Monsters will play two the next day.
