The right-hander struck out nine and walked three for his first win of the summer. Cooper surrendered one hit the first time through the order and set down nine of the first 11 he faced. Jackson Smith(Ithaca College) sparked a five-run Monarchs (7-6) fifth with a bases-loaded single to score Hector Vargas(Corning CC) and Cole Penders(Brockport College). Vargas walked three times and scored twice in the game. Brandon Henshaw(St. Bonaventure), Tyler Cyrus(John Carroll) and Max Argento(John Carroll) collected an RBI apiece. Ryan Kalbfus(Gannon) singled and scored a run. Tommy Baxter(Dayton) added a run. Aaron Shoemaker(Finger Lakes CC) walked twice and scored. Mike Magnanti(St. Bonaventure) went 2-for-4. Nate Chase(Grand Valley State) led the Lake Monsters (8-6) going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Zach Hartersingled, walked twice and drove in a run. MONARCHS 4 FLYIN' FISH 3 Jackson Smith(Ithaca College) scampered home on a wild pitch with the winning run in the top of the seventh, and the Monarchs (8-6) moved into a tie with the Lake Monsters for first place in the ICBL's Rochester Division. With the game knotted at three, Smith worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Max Argento(John Carroll) sacrifice bunt before eventually scoring. Mike Donofrio(Brockport College) improved to 3-0 on the season. The left-hander allowed two runs on three hits over three innings of relief work. Quin Ignaszak(Bethel College) started and allowed one run on four hits over four innings in the scheduled seven-inning game. Ignaszak, who was pressed into service during game one of the night, struck out nine and walked. The right-hander worked an inning and a third in the earlier outing. Tyler Cyrus(John Carroll) finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Cole Penders(Brockport College) singled and scored. Argento crossed home earlier in the game. Stephen Kemp(Medaille College) and Hector Vargas(Corning CC) drove in a run apiece. Christian Montanez(Roger Williams) knotted the game at three for the Fish with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth. Jason Schulz(RIT) and Ben Martin(Brockport College) both finished 2-for-3 with a double for the Fish. Martin drove in a run. Schulz scored once. Ryan Hill(Monroe CC) doubled and scored a run. John Gassler(New York University) fanned five over 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
LAKE MONSTERS 12 FLYIN' FISH 2 Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) and Nate Chase(Grand Valley State) both homered, and Jourdan Plaisted(Elmira College) paced a 13-hit attack as the Lake Show jumped to an early lead and put the game away in the sixth. Catapano led the game with a solo shot. Chase connected on a two-out solo shot in the third to give the Monsters a 5-1 lead. Plaisted 3-for-4 with a bases-clearing double in the second and a run-scoring single in the seventh. Zach Harterhighlighted a four-run sixth with a double that plated Colin Coykendall(Monroe CC) and Brennen Smith(Monroe CC). Billy Sanborn(Jefferson CC) followed with a triple, and the Monsters led 9-2. Logan Martella-Tasick(Monroe CC) tripled and scored a run. Ryan Green(Tulane) allowed one run on three hits over four innings for the win. The right-hander struck out nine and walked three for his first win. Matt Dessena(St. John Fisher) gave up one run on four hits over three innings. Sanborn hurled two shutout frames. Sanborn went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Dan Bamann(Keuka College) went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Flyin' Fish. Shane Hake(Elmira College) singled and scored a run.
MONARCHS 2 LAKE MONSTERS 12 Jake Hewitt(St. John Fisher) scattered three hits over four shutout innings in his first appearance of the summer, and the Lake Show (8-5) completed the sweep. Hewitt fanned six and walked two for the win. The right-hander threw 66 pitches (43 for strikes). Jourdan Plaisted(Elmira College) continued his hot hitting going 2-for-2 with a run scored. Brennen Smith(Monroe CC) homered. David Stirpe(Messiah College) drove in a pair and scored twice. Colin Coykendall(Monroe CC) walked and came home twice. Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) collected three walks and two runs scored.
LAKE MONSTERS 2 MONARCHS 11 Brandon Henshaw(St. Bonaventure) finished 2-for-4 including an RBI single in the first as the Monarchs put crooked numbers on the board in each of the first three innings. Henshaw brought in Mike Sabatine(University of Maine) with the first run of the game, and Tanner Cooper(Finger Lakes CC) followed with a run-scoring double, and the Monarchs ran away with the game adding four runs in the second and four more in the third. Quinn Ignaszak(Bethel College) took over from there and dominated over five innings. The former Brockport Blue Devil hurled five shutout innings striking out five and allowing two hits. Ignaszak faced three batters over the limit and retired 11 of the last 12 batters who trotted to the plate. Steven Kemp(Medaille College) collected a hit, two walks and two runs scored. Jackson Smith(Ithaca College) drove in two with a single. Cooper had two RBI. Ryan Kalbfus(Gannon) tripled, drove in a run and scored another. The Monarchs improved to 6-5 with the win. FLYIN' FISH 9 LAKE MONSTERS 4 Jason Schulz(RIT) finished 2-for-4 including a two-run triple in the fourth inning when the Fish sent 10 to the plate, erased a three-run deficit and did not trail again. Matt Carroll(SUNY Fredonia) capped the outburst with a two-out, two-run single, and the Fish led 6-3. Matt Petrossi(Monroe CC) made the offensive effort stick going five innings for the right-hander's first win of the summer. Petrossi allowed three runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out two and walked one. Kole Brink(SUNY Fredonia) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Sean Sheets(Keuka College) and Shane Hake(Elmira College) both singled and scored. Christian Montanez(Roger Williams University) was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. John Faynor(Genesee CC) had two hits in three at bats with an RBI and a run scored. Mike Perlo(Cornell University) doubled and drove in two. John Gassler(NYU) allowed one run on one hit over two innings of relief work. The southpaw fanned four and walked one. He threw 34 pitches - 20 for strikes. Nate Chase(Grand Valley State) had two hits including a triple and drove in two for the Lake Monsters. Jonathan Catapano(Monroe CC) had a hit and an RBI for the Lake Show. Logan Martella-Tasick(Monroe CC) singled, walked once and scored twice. Colin Coykendall(Monroe CC) and Jordan Plaisted(Elmira College) had a single and scored a run apiece. With the win the Fish improved to 6-6, and the Monsters fell to 6-5. All three teams of the Interstate Collegiate Baseball League's Rochester Division are within a half game of each other after three weeks of play.
Kalbfus pushes the power button; Hill and Fish walk off
FLYIN' FISH 9 MONARCHS 13 Ryan Kalbfus(Gannon) finished 3-for-3 and collected 10 total bases, but Brandon Henshaw(St. Bonaventure) delivered the decisive blow for the Monarchs. Kalbfus connected on his first two home runs of the season and added a double to cap his outburst at the plate. The Monarchs third baseman had a two-run shot in the third. He followed with a three-run blast in the fifth. Kalbfus narrowly missed a trifecta when his drive to straight center hopped the fence at Towers Field 375 feet from home plate for a ground-rule double. The Monarchs led 8-1 when the Fish sent 11 to the plate in the seventh to take a 9-8 lead. Henshaw took over from there with an inside-the-park grand slam in the eighth - his third round-tripper of the season. Mike Sabatine(University of Maine) collected a hit, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored for the Monarchs. Cole Penders(Brockport College) scored twice. Max Argentowalked and scored twice. Dan Bamann(Keuka College) and Anthony Mashewske(Keuka College) both doubled, drove in two runs and scored another.
LAKE MONSTERS 9 FLYIN' FISH 11 Ryan Hill(Monroe CC) capped a dramatic rally with a walk-off single as seven straight Fish reached with two outs in the their last at-bat. Hill's single scored Jason Schulz(RIT) and Dan Bamann(Keuka College) to snap a 9-all tie. Trailing 9-5, Matt Carroll(SUNY Fredonia) started the comeback with a two-out walk. John Faynor(Genesee CC) singled, and Jeff Wilson(Le Moyne College) loaded the bases when he worked a free pass. Two runs came home when Sean Sheets(Keuka College) reached on a error. Bamann's bases-loaded walk cut the margin to one and a wild pitch tied the game to set up Hill. Sheets worked a scoreless 2/3 of an inning to to pick up the win. Sheets finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Hill went 3-for-5 with a triple and five RBI. Bamann drove in three and scored twice. Sean Flannery(Kings College) went 2-for-3 to lead the Lake Monsters. The Wayne Eagle had a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Jason Tisa(Wilkes University) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Dom Palma(Manhattan College) delivered a pinch-hit three-run home run in the top of the seventh to give the Lake Monsters a 9-5 advantage. Brian Linton(Johns Hopkins) allowed one run on one hit over 2 1/3 innings of relief work for the Lake Monsters. The right-hander retired seven straight at one point needing just 23 pitches over that stretch.

Magnanti hit .444 (8-for-18) and reached base in each of the Monarchs first seven games. He compiled three multi-hits games and produced 15 (11 runs scored/four RBI) of his squad's 44 runs over that stretch. Magnanti went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the Monarchs opening night win over the Flyin' Fish and was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in a loss to the Lake Monsters.
